Marian June (George) Hiben Parsons, Kansas Obituary

Marian June (George) Hiben

Marian Hiben, 93, of Parsons, KS died Saturday, October 9, 2021, at the home of her son. She was born June 11, 1928, to Albert and Bessie (Oles) George in Albert Lea, Minnesota. She grew up in Albert Lea with four brothers. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1946 and from Nursing School, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She married John Hiben in Minneapolis in 1952. They lived in: Minneapolis; Bradley, SD; Ottawa, and Lawrence, KS before moving to Parsons in 1968. She worked as a nurse, in each of those towns, retiring from Parsons State Hospital in 1980. After her retirement, she worked as an independently contracted home health care nurse. One of these jobs resulted in her becoming an avid KU basketball fan. She loved children, operating her own day care, helping at various local day cares, babysitting for her grandchildren, working in the church nursery, and transporting other’s children to and from school. Her hobbies included, sewing, quilting, volunteering, genealogy, traveling, and playing games. She made her daughters’ clothes when they were younger along with matching Barbie outfits. She was active in the Morning Glory Circle, Labette County, Home Extension Unit and the American Quilter’s Society. She enjoyed making quilts for each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. During the 70’s and 80’s, she was an integral part of the American Red Cross Blood Bank. Her interest in genealogy led to discovering many cousins and unraveling family mysteries. She attended as many family reunions as she could. Her love for travel took her to many of the United States, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Cayman Islands, Cozumel, and Jamacia. She enjoyed weekly game days with friends. She didn’t like missing an episode of Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune. And, heaven forbid that anyone got in between her and the television when they were on. As a child, she came to know the Lord. She was dedicated to her faith—everything she did revolved around serving God. She lived her life in complete service to others. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, in Parsons. She is survived by a daughter, Gini (Mike) Knowles of Temecula, CA, and a son, Dan (Joyce) Hiben of Oswego, KS. Seven grandchildren, Juston (Jackie) Smith, Connie (James) Blundell, Clayton (Athena) Hiben, Chelsea (Billy) Carter, Kevin (Tabitha) Hiben, Alex Knowles, Bryse Knowles and 19 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
