James Francis Reiter Toledo, Ohio Obituary

James Francis Reiter

James F. Reiter, 58, of Toledo, OH passed away peacefully on October 7, 2021 at Sunshine Communities in Maumee, OH. Jim was born in Birmingham, MI on August 10, 1963 to James P. Reiter and Joann M. (Stapleton) Harris. After spending his very early years in Grand Rapids, MI, Jim grew up in Toledo, becoming very involved in the community through his work, athletic accomplishments, and church. Jim graduated from Central Catholic High School and went on to work at Lott Industries on Hill Ave. from 1982 – 2017. He then worked at Triad Residential Solutions from 2017 – 2019. He was always the hardest worker, the go-to guy. Jim’s claim to fame, though, was his participation in Special Olympics in softball, bowling, golf, swimming, and tennis. He won numerous awards in all the sports in which he participated. Among his stellar accomplishments: 1984 Olympics Torchbearer in the nationwide torch relay; participated in two of the Special Olympics World Games, in New Haven, CT in 1995, and in Dublin, Ireland in 2003 (winning the bronze medal in doubles tennis competition); he also participated in the Special Olympics National Games in Lincoln, NB in 2010, having the opportunity to play with pro tennis player Andy Roddick. Jim was a member of St. Clement’s church and was a Eucharistic Minister, serving at Mass most Sundays for many years. Jim was the most outgoing, friendly person you’d ever meet. Always reaching out to his those he knew or who he just met, he’d shake your hand and give you a hug while smiling his infectious smile. He was a friend to many. But most important to him, he would say, was family! Jim is survived by his siblings Richard G. Reiter (Joyce A. Vener), Catherine J. Holmes (Robert E. Holmes, dec.), Robert J, Reiter (Judy Reiter); numerous nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Joann M. Harris in 2016, father James P. Reiter in 1968, step-father Franklin H. Harris in 1982, and brother-in-law Robert E. Holmes in 2018. Family will receive friends at St. Clement Catholic Church, 3030 Tremainsville Rd., Toledo on Saturday, October 16 after 10 a.m., where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. (The service will be live-streamed on St. Clement’s YouTube page.) Interment will be private. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Jim's memory to Sunshine Communities, 7223 Maumee-Western Road, Maumee, OH 43537 or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be shared with the family at walkerfuneralhomes.com. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sunshine Communities and NWO Hospice for their loving care, and SAS Nichole Longeway.
