Dennis M. "Mike" Duggan Obituary

Dennis M. (“Mike”) Duggan Col. US Army (Ret.) Age 85 died quietly on the morning of Friday October 1, 2021. He was born in Maui, Territory of Hawaii on August 20, 1936. The son of teachers, his family moved to Oahu after the Pearl Harbor attacks. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1954 and from West Point in 1959. Mike married his sweetheart, Judy Nusser in New York City in December of that year. They had two children, Maryann and Michael. He is also survived by his brother, Donovan F. Duggan of Albuquerque, and three nephews. His 25-year army career included assignments with Airborne Infantry units, as an advisor to Vietnamese Ranger units, and Special Forces units, and as commander of a Basic Combat Training battalion. It also included assignments with the Department of the Army and the JCS, and with the ATDC. He served two combat tours in Vietnam, and a tour in Korea. He also served as Defense Attaché to the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador. Mike attended the Army War College, and received an MA from the University of Maryland. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldiers’ Medal, three Bronze Stars with “V” device, Purple Heart, and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry; he also was awarded Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger and Special Forces Tabs, and Pathfinder Badge. After the army, he served as an advisor to the Republic of China Army. He then worked as an Assistant and Deputy Director and lobbyist in the American Legion for over 20 years. He then worked for the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs helping veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq suffering from PTSD and TBI. After a year, he transferred to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda to work as a Red Cross volunteer. Mike had an abiding love of his family, history, the Hawaiian Islands, Army football, and grilled steaks. A memorial service and burial with full military honors are planned for Arlington National Cemetery, and will be announced at a later date.
