Archie Nicklie Obituary

Archie Nicklie was born on September 17, 1938, in Valdez Creek, Alaska and went to be with the Lord on October 4, 2021. He was 83 years old. He is survived by his sisters: Elsie Nicklie, Eleanor Dementi and Margie Ewan. Nieces and nephews: Brenda Rebne, Rhoda Brown, Paula Nicklie, Tammany George, Lisa and Helen Christiansen, Linda Towne, Lingo Nicklie Jr., Gilbert Dementi Jr., Darrel Dementi, Harold (Frankie) Nicklie, Robert (Bobby) Nicklie, and Michael Ewan; Cousins: David Nicklie, Violet Jamison, Jane Nicholas, Louise Mayo, and Helga Wiebe. He was preceded in death by his parents Dan and Tammany Nicklie; Brothers: Andrew, Lingo, Homer, Tracy and Harold Nicklie and niece: Kimberly Ewan and nephews: Joseph, Daniel, and William (Billy) Nicklie and Kenneth Ewan. Archie served our country in the Armed Forces as a gunner and heavy weapons infantryman, being honorably discharged in 1963 as a private 1st class E3 and served in the reserve until 1967. He had lots of memories of his time spent in the Army and the many friends he served with and would often tell interesting stories of his years in the service. After the Army, he spent most of his working career as a laborer, eventually retiring from the Laborers Union 341. He worked all over the state including working for the Alaska Railroad, the Air Force, the Exxon Oil Spill, and many years on the Alyeska pipeline. His nieces and nephews recall him coming home on his R and R and taking them shopping, filling their refrigerators, or getting them whatever he could or thought they needed, and he always had a jar of coins for one of them. He would also take them all our for dinner and they all have many memories of this happy times together. He had no children of his own, so he made every one of his nieces and nephews feel like they were his favorite and took great care that they all had anything they needed. He was also a skilled teaser and prankster. He taught all his nieces and nephews how to play card games like canasta, hearts, and cribbage. He would always jokingly try to cheat so we would get mad at him, and he would just laugh and laugh and deny he did anything. He would tease and say, “it’s not cheating if you don’t get caught”. In his retirement he kept busy refurbishing used furniture or building new pieces for his friends and family. Many of us still have furniture that he made for us with love. He was always convinced his nieces and nephews needed new super heavy coats and was always giving them new ones, which they would always laugh about with each other. He was a generous man with many friends and family that will miss him dearly. We can take great comfort he is with the Lord in Heaven surrounded by our loved ones that have gone before him. A visitation for Archie will be held on Friday, October 8, 2021, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Anchorage Funeral Home. We ask that you all observe COVID protocols (face masks inside the building, social distancing when needed). Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Cantwell Community Hall, followed by burial at the Cantwell Cemetery.
