Chenty "Yaya" Chiara Washburn Obituary

Chenty “Yaya” Washburn, 75, peacefully passed away on September 24, 2021. Chenty was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She resided in San Francisco, California for a few years before following her heart back home to Honolulu, Hawaii. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunty, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Those who were blessed to know Chenty would agree that she was a beautiful soul. She was selfless and put your needs before her own. She was determined in everything she set her mind to. She was compassionate and welcomed everyone with open arms. She was quite the observer. You often wondered what she was thinking. Her scowl was intimidating, nothing got past her. She was firm when she needed to be, but you knew it always stemmed from a loving place. She led with grace and never made you second guess her loyalty. Her actions spoke louder than words. You learned the value of perseverance and patience just by watching her sit for hours behind a sewing machine. Her wisdom grew from her interest in museums, solving crossword puzzles, and reading late at night on current events from the newspaper. She adored going on many travelling adventures for she was someone who enjoyed the ride just as much as the destination. She kept a tidy house and always had something cooking on the stove. She was a magician in the kitchen. You were lucky if you got to taste her famous Portuguese Bean Soup during Christmas. Chenty's greatest accomplishment was her family. Her life revolved around her loved ones and it made her happy to see them smile. Not only did Chenty enjoy being surrounded by her family, she also invested her time in creating a special bond with each individual. Her bond made you feel important, valued, and loved - no matter near or far. She was the heart of the family that connected everyone and her legacy will carry on through each of us. It was Chenty and George's 56 glorious years of marriage that proves just how deep their love ran. They were inseparable. She was his "lady”. “Toots” on some days and “baby” on others, they shared a love with no regrets. If you ever question who wore the pants in the relationship, it was secretly Chenty. Their playful banter, most of which were over her Raiders and his Niners, showed just how special their love truly was. It was admirable, inspirational, and a “diamond in the rough” kind of love. Their commitment to each other and memories together will forever live on. It is with great comfort that Chenty's unfailing faith has led her home. She is our angel watching over all of us. Preceded in death by mother, Laura Fonseca; brothers, Alfred Kaluau, Lot Fonseca; and family dog, Makana. She is survived by father, George (Martha) Fonseca; husband, George Washburn Sr.; brother, George Edward Fonseca; sister, Melchisedec Fonseca; children, Chenty Washburn-Bonifacio (Vincent), Jerlene Washburn, Carol Gasper, LaVelle Washburn-Valdez (Patrick), George Washburn Jr.; grandchildren, Chenty Bonifacio, Liandra Bonifacio, Chaude Bonifacio, Alisha Bonifacio, Nyree Valdez, Kasi Young; great-grandchildren, Ariah Bonifacio-Faleao, Arianah Bonifacio-Faleao, Amarah Bonifacio-Faleao; Lot (Lisa) Kaluau and Kaluau 'Ohana; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Due to the pandemic, private services will be held.
