MaryEllen Johnson MACHIAS, Maine Obituary

MaryEllen Johnson

MARYELLEN JOHNSON MACHIAS — MaryEllen Johnson, 80, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, after a brief illness. She was born June 26, 1941, at home in Machias to Elmer R. and Vivian (Stoddard) Johnson. MaryEllen grew up on Dublin Street, graduating from Machias High School and leaving only to attend Barrington College. She dedicated most of her life to children, running a daycare from her home until the 1990s and teaching Sunday School classes at Machias Valley Baptist Church, where for many years she also sang in the choir. Hundreds of children knew her as Mae Mae or Miss MaryEllen, and she remembered each and every one. She loved to tell stories about "her kids" and her life, able to recall events and conversations from decades ago in minute detail. Before her retirement, she often could be seen walking with a stroller and a gaggle of children up Dublin Street hill and back again. MaryEllen also collected seals of all shapes, varieties and sizes. She delighted in her collection, with different ones found throughout the house, from the miniature ceramic pair by her living room chair to the ones tucked onto the kitchen window sill. MaryEllen is survived by her nieces, Janine Pineo and Faith Ellen Pineo, both of Hudson; nephews Dale Pineo Jr. and his family of Glenburn and Matthew Pineo of Monte Rio, Calif.; and numerous friends. She was predeceased by her father, Elmer, in 1991; her mother, Vivian, in 2018; her sister, Janice J. Pineo in 2018; and her brother-in-law, Dale G. Pineo Sr. in 2020. A small graveside service, officiated by longtime friend John Sprague, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Jacksonville Cemetery in East Machias. The family requests that any attending the service wear masks in respect and protection of each other. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to remember MaryEllen donate to a children's charity of their choice. Arrangements by McClure Family Funeral Services.
