Eleanor Gertrude Brown Obituary

Eleanor Gertrude Brown (née MacNair)
December 12, 1931 – September 26, 2021

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Eleanor Brown, who passed away peacefully on a sunny September Sunday in Oakville, ON with her daughters by her side, and her sons in her heart.

Beloved wife of (late) Roy J. Brown, she is survived by her children: Cathy Hayman (Steve), Oakville, ON; James Brown (Eunja Casey Lee), Anyang, South Korea; Susan Little (Michael), Oakville, ON; Dr. Robert Brown (Jocelyn), Regina, SK; Mary Thomson, Dallas, TX; and grandchildren, Marley, Miles and Emily Little; Tyler (Diana) and Caitie Collins; Ryan, Eleanor, Charlotte and Macy Thomson, as well as step-grandchildren Min Jae Sung and Alex and Nick Hayman. She will be greatly missed by so many dear friends and extended family.

Born in Jacquet River, New Brunswick to H. Gertrude (Tru) (née Clarke) and N. Ernest McNair, she was the youngest of seven children, and was predeceased by her siblings - Penelope, Arthur, Evan, Kenneth, Nathaniel, and Anne.

Eleanor was a proud second-generation graduate of Mount Allison University in Sackville, following in her mother’s footsteps. She graduated as a dietitian and went on to intern at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal QC, as well as The Moncton Hospital in Moncton, NB.

She began her career in Fredericton, NB where she bought her first home, her first boat, and had lots of adventures along with her sister, Annie. She then married Roy, and they started their beautiful family. Three children later, Roy was transferred to Toronto, and life in Ontario began. Two more children followed, and Eleanor committed her life to raising them all in love and faith. In her seemingly tireless fashion, she supported all her children in their many pursuits - education, sports, dance, music and other interests.

A woman of strong faith, Eleanor served many leadership roles, including with the United Church Women, and Meals on Wheels. With her children grown, she returned to a full-time career as a dietitian working within the food service sector. In retirement, Eleanor was able to continue to share her love for friends and community, and her always present gift of service, as she balanced her time between her homes in Ontario and New Brunswick. Her dedication to her churches and the deep friendships within each community provided her with many blessings.

As Eleanor spoke of her own mother, she often commented that her desire when she left this world was just to be remembered as kind and Eleanor lived her life this way.  Our hearts are broken but we will continue Eleanor’s legacy of kindness, in a world where this is so needed.

In keeping with Eleanor’s wishes, there will be no visitation at this time. A memorial service for family and friends will take place in New Brunswick in the summer of 2022. Details to follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Chaleur United Church in Nash Creek, NB or to the maintenance fund of the Jacquet River Meeting House in Jacquet River, NB.  The Meeting house was built in the 1800’s, and Mom attended Sunday school there as a little girl.  She played a lead role in it being lovingly restored in 2002.
