We mournfully announce the death of Frances Joan Wesley, 86, of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Joan passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of September 13, 2021, at Health Sciences North with family present. Our sincere thanks to hospital staff at all levels, and Dr. Bill McMullen, physician and friend, who assisted her final journey. Joan was born in Stratford, Ontario, to Sarah Eleanor (Daisy) and Francis George (Frank) Wesley. She moved to Sudbury in 1955 for the opening of the Memorial Hospital. Joan then worked for many years as a medical secretary with Dr. George Walker and other physicians in the area. Joan was president of the Sudbury branch of the Ontario Medical Secretaries Association. As chairman of the education committee she led the development of community college and correspondence courses for medical secretaries. The Association recognized her proficiency and contributions by naming her Medical Secretary of the Year for the Province of Ontario in 1967 and 1968. While Joan never married, she lived a full and vibrant life. Her many friends will remember her joyful spirit, unfailing loyalty, empathy and fierce independence. Her nieces and nephews will recount tales of many happy Christmases, her outrageous gag gifts, and the shop-‘til-you-drop expeditions. Joan travelled extensively abroad. She was an avid collector of jazz greats and shared her love for music of all genres with many. She was a skilled crafts person, and collector of dolls and Hummel figurines. She rewrote the Canada Food Guide, naming three food groups: Eat Out, Take Out and Order In! She is survived by her sister, Phyllis Woods, brother, Frank (Butch) Wesley, devoted cousin, Wanda Murray and a host of nieces and nephews in a five-generation family. Friends may visit at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury from 2 to 4 PM on Saturday, September 18, 2021. Joan will be buried in a family plot in Stratford, Ontario.
