Wayne Chase Panter
<p>Service of Celebration for Wayne Chase Panter, 98 of Lubbock will be held at Noon, Saturday, October 2nd, 2021, at Cooks Garage (11002 US-87, Lubbock). Friends are invited to join the Family for an afternoon of fellowship to share stories, reminisce, and celebrate a life well lived.</p> <p>Wayne was born April 27, 1923, to Elizabeth Boyce and Austin Flint Panter in Lincoln, NE. He went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 2, 2021, following a brief illness resulting from a fall.</p> <p>A World War II veteran, Wayne joined the US Navy in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. He achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class and lead a team servicing the F4U Corsair fighter. He was an active member of VFW post 2466 in Lubbock holding several positions including Judge Advocate. Wayne was a 1949 graduate of the University of Nebraska and a long-time employee of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Wayne worked for the AJ from 1954 until his retirement in 1995. He served the community of Lubbock as news editor, copy editor and sportswriter during his career at the AJ. Wayne was past president of the Lubbock Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Lubbock Racing Association, Lubbock Karting Association, and a member of the Big Car Racing Association (BCRA), United States Auto Club (USAC), Kansas Antique Racers (KAR) and Colorado Vintage Oval Racers (CVOR). Wayne's passion for our Country's veterans and the sport of auto racing was evident in most everything he did.</p> <p>Wayne was preceded in death by a son, Robert B. Panter, a sister, Martha Rivett, and his parents. Survivors include two Daughters, Leslie P. DePasqual and husband Joe of Weatherford, TX, and Denise D. Kirk of Lubbock, TX. Three Sons, Steven W. Panter and wife Elizabeth of Denver, CO, Douglas B. Sanders of Grand Junction, CO and Darron L. Sanders of Phoenix, AZ. 11 Grandchildren, 14 Great-Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great Grandchildren, 2 Nieces and 2 Nephews. Additionally, the family would like to acknowledge the host of friends and family that supported and cared for Wayne over the past several years which allowed him to remain fiercely independent until his last days.</p> <p>Special thanks to Wayne's grandson Ryan Sanders. Ryan accompanied his grandfather to numerous appointments, VFW events and regular breakfast meetings. The bond they shared is one to be truly celebrated.</p> <p>Memorials can be directed the Ancile "Al" White VFW Post 2466, P.O. Box 3126, Lubbock, TX 79452.
