Ghislaine Geneste Smith

Ghislaine Geneste Smith, of Hayesville, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2021 at a local hospital. Ghislaine was born in Paris France on June 14, 1925. She attended the Lycee Jean de La Fontaine in Paris 16eme and Janson de Sally. During WWII, Ghislaine worked for the US Army as a translator. At the age of 21, she came to the United States by herself. She married Thomas A. Smith who was just graduating from Emory Dental School. They relocated to Winston-Salem and raised four children. She taught French at Summit School and Forsyth Country Day School, as well as a small private school near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. Ghislaine eventually moved back to Atlanta, Georgia and enjoyed continuing her teaching ventures at L’Alliance Francaise for 25 years. She was very active socially in the French community for years. Her last year was spent with her daughter Kat and her son-in-law Gary, up in the gorgeous mountains of South Western North Carolina. She enjoyed sitting on the back porch and watching Tusquitee Creek. She was able to enjoy the daily beauty that this area offers. As an immigrant to the United States, Ghislaine was truly proud to be an American. She believed that the United States was the greatest country in the world and that the strength of the United States was in its people, her self-sufficiency, and grit. She was a big supporter of Donald Trump as she felt that he brought the power of the people back to the people. Ghislaine was the daughter of the late Claude and Gabrielle Poupon Geneste, and wife of the late Dr. Thomas Alexander Smith.
