Thomas H. Carney Sr. Obituary

Thomas H. Carney Sr. 89 “Blue Max”, of Back Street, Seekonk passed away Saturday January 9, 2016 at his daughters home in Rehoboth. He was the husband of the late Angelina (Olivieri) Carney. Born in Boston, MA he was the son of the late William H. and Alice (McCormick) Carney. He was Truck Driver for Arrow Transportation.

As a truck driver for Arrow Transportation he touched the lives of many who would only know him as “Blue Max.” Thomas travelled the highways of America before cell phones and GPS tamed the the country’s roads and rest stops. Taking his CB handle as his identity he willingly put his own life on the line to help others, once stopping to pull a fellow driver from his burning truck, another time performing CPR to revive an accident victim he happened upon. Never seeking personal glory, the Blue Max became a whispered legend across the airways, and only years after his retirement did his family and friends learn of his secret heroism.

He is survived by one daughter Susan A. Barreira and her husband Angelo, five sons John Carney and his wife Linda, Raymond Carney, Thomas H. Carney Jr. and his wife Mary, Patrick Carney, Charles Carney, and Christine Benevides, fourteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one brother Robert Carney. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth Gomez.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 11 AM in the PERRY-McSTAY FUNERAL HOME 2555 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Southcoast Visiting Nurses Association.
