Macy Anderson Guilliams Obituary

A beloved father and grandfather, Macy Anderson Guilliams passed away on September 2, 2021 of complications from the Coronavirus. He was 97 years old. Born on July 16, 1924 in Callaway, Virginia, Macy grew up on his family’s farm, the second-youngest of nine children born to Geno Ferdinand Guilliams and Florence Howell Guilliams. He enlisted in the Army in January 1943 at age 19, and served as an Army medic. His tour included participating in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in November 1945. Macy met his wife, Ruth Schroeder, in Baltimore, Maryland, in January 1948. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day 1948, and married on September 11 of that year. Macy and Ruth raised two daughters, Judy and Robyn; their lives centered around home and family. They lived in Baltimore until 1974, when Macy’s employer, American Standard, transferred him to Louisville, Kentucky. Macy and Ruth lived in Kentucky until 1986, when they moved back to Maryland to be closer to their daughters. An avid gardener, Macy grew a wide variety of vegetables and kept the family (and neighbors!) stocked with fresh produce every summer. His garden at his Louisville home was so large and the vegetables so abundant that Ruth (a Baltimore City girl) learned how to can vegetables so as to preserve the harvest and keep the Guilliams family pantry stocked during winter. In addition to gardening, Macy enjoyed reading, going for long walks, spending time with his grandchildren, cooking big meals for family visits, and smoking his cigars on summer evenings. He was popular with the neighborhood kids, who loved to visit him and climb the tree in the front yard while he sat outside. Macy was preceded in death by Ruth, his wife of 60 years, as well as his seven brothers and one sister. He is survived by his two daughters, Judy Guilliams-Tapia and Robyn Guilliams, his son-in-law Juan Tapia-Videla and his two grandchildren, Marco Antonio Tapia-Guilliams and Camila Isabel Tapia-Guilliams, as well as many nieces and nephews. In his final years, Macy resided at The Village at Rockville (formerly known as the National Lutheran Home) in Maryland. Macy’s family sends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and volunteers there who took such good care of Macy. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in his honor to The Village at Rockville, Inc. (a tax-deductible 501(c)(3) charity), 9701 Viers Drive, Rockville, MD, 20850 or at www.thevillageatrockville.org. A celebration of Macy’s life will be scheduled at a later time.
