Jim Hayward Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador Obituary

Jim Hayward

After a long-lived life and the last of his generation, Jim Hayward of Bond’s Path, formerly of Red Island, Placentia Bay, passed peacefully away in the presence of his family on Monday, September 13, 2021 at the Lions Manor, Placentia at the age of 94. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Violet (Barron); his parents James & Margaret (Judge) Hayward; his daughters: Barb, Katie & Julie; his grandson Brad Greene; and all his siblings. Leaving to mourn his children: Marg (Harold Sewell), Joe, Pad (Florence), Joanie (Graydon Sipe), Wilhelmina, Jimmy (Karen), Wayne (Dawn), Iggy (Corrine), and Evelyn Ann; 28 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great grandchildren; his in-laws Jim Barron (Deborah), Frank Barron (Marg), Evelyn Ennis (Andy); also many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He was a dad, pop, uncle, and friend to all, but he was always fondly known as “Jim Hayward”. Jim Hayward worked as a labourer for his family. He left Red Island at the age of 16 and went to work in Stephenville where he met his wife, Violet. Then they made their way home to Placentia, where they settled “on the hill”. He worked at the Northeast Arm Camps in Dunville, walking the 9 kilometers to and from work every day until he was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and unable to continue working. After that you could find him puttering around on the hill, tending the gardens with Bo, playing the harmonica at the end of the kitchen table, living a simple life – teaching kindness, strength, his love for his family, and keeping true to his faith. He will be forever loved and missed by all. Special thanks to all staff of the Placentia Lions Manor (where he resided the past 9 years) who fondly referred to him as “Pop”, and who showed him the utmost kindness and respect to the very end. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Coombs Funeral Home, Placentia. Public visitation will take place at Coombs Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Funeral mass to take place on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Placentia. Interment to follow at Coombs Memorial Cemetery, Southeast. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mount Carmel Cemetery, Placentia or a charity of one's choice. “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
