William A. Westmoreland

William Andrew Westmoreland of 1592 John Everall Road, Lancaster, passed away at his home Tuesday, March 12, 2013. He was 88. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Bill Westmoreland was born March 9, 1925, in Clover, the son of Douglas Alvastroth Westmoreland and Edna Worthington Eaker Westmoreland. He graduated from Clover High School in 1942 and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II, stationed on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. He graduated from Clemson College in 1950 with a double major in poultry science and vocational agricultural education. He and Mary Kathryn Black married that year and moved to Lancaster, where they celebrated their 62nd anniversary last September. Mr. Westmoreland taught vocational agriculture at Buford High School from 1951-57. He then spent 30 years at Lancaster Feed and Farm Supply as manager of farm operations and store manager, sharing with the community his passion and expertise in livestock health and nutrition, gardening and other agricultural pursuits. He was a member and leader at First United Methodist Church. He served on the Lancaster County Board of Education and as an officer of the local and state Farm Bureau. He was an enthusiastic supporter of all things Clemson. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kathryn Black Westmoreland; children, William A. Westmoreland Jr. of Lancaster and fiance Elaine Rej of Lexington, Kay and James H. Owen Jr. of Clover, Joy and Brian H. Melton of Linville Falls, N.C., and Nancy E. Westmoreland of Lancaster; grandchildren, Katie and Trey Sasser of Watertown, Mass., Henry and Elizabeth Owen of York, Drew Anne Westmoreland of Columbia and Anna Melton of Asheville, N.C.; great-granddaughters, Mary Alice Owen, Annabel Nancy Sasser and Elizabeth James Owen; sister, Charlotte Barnett of Clover; brothers and sisters-in-law, James D. Westmoreland of Clover, Robert W. and Elsie Westmoreland of Rock Hill, Jack F. and Betty Westmoreland of Clover, Ted and Margaret Westmoreland of Shelby, N.C.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Claire B. and C.G. Wilson of Moncks Corner, 13 nieces and 12 nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, D.A. and Geri Westmoreland; sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Avery Adkins; daughter-in-law, Jan Bethea Westmoreland; sisters-in-law Pratt H. Westmoreland and Willie S. Westmoreland; brother-in-law James Barnett; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Virginia and Sidney Crawford. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, followed by visitation in the fellowship hall.
