Norman Knut SATHER
Norman Sather passed away peacefully, at home in Sidney, on September 10, 2021, with his wife Sonja by his side. He was born in 1937 in New Westminster, B.C., grew up in Delta, and completed High School at Camrose Lutheran College in Camrose, Alberta. He went on to study chemistry at the University of British Columbia, where he also obtained his teaching certificate. He started dating his future wife, Sonja, in Prince Rupert in 1957. After graduation they married and moved to Castlegar, BC. In Castlegar, Norm taught at Stanley Humphries Secondary School for 33 years, teaching science to two generations of students. When not at school, he could often be found in the garden or hiking, fishing and skiing in the beautiful West Kootenays. After a well-earned retirement, Norman and Sonja divided their time between their home in Castlegar and their lakefront cabin in Kaslo, eventually spending their winters in Sidney, B.C. In each place, Norm was a welcoming and entertaining host to friends and family. All his life, Norm was a thankful follower of Christ and a steadfast member of the Lutheran family. Besides his notable support of his local church and community, he was particularly dedicated to his mission work supporting refugees as they settled into their new life in Canada and travelling to northern Canada to help with construction of a new house for the Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Sonja, by his daughter Sari (Rick), by his sons Steven (Paula) and Eric (Noy), and by his grandchildren Leah, Else, and Manny.
