Mary Lambie Jackson Leonard Obituary

Mary’s family shared her precious moments leading to her home in heaven on Saturday, August 28, 2021.  She went as she had prayed to--in her sleep--and in relief of COPD and other hindrances that had been getting in her way. Mary was smart, adventurous, interesting, industrious, and capable. She was a Valiant Child of God who led her family to know Jesus for themselves, a legacy that continues (and that includes many of you reading this now!)    Mary was born in Chicago on September 23, 1933, and was raised in Elmhurst, with her engineer father, Horace Henderson Lambie, and his homemaking and peacekeeping bride, Florence Regina Sanschagrin Lambie.  Mary was the fifth child of their eight children, their middle daughter of three. When she was a child, Mary’s father praised her abilities in making the “Sunday Supper” (popcorn and sliced apples, following the earlier “Sunday Dinner”). And, according to her sister Betty, Mary was considered "the sweetest of the girls," and reminded their father of their mother ("no greater compliment could he give"). Mary attended and graduated from the Immaculate Conception Catholic School. She then attended Northwestern University in Evanston, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority (while being engaged). She graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Francis Nursing School in Evanston. Mary would work as an R.N. into her early 80s, and earned special certification in Orthopedic Nursing shortly before retiring. Mary wed James Douglas Jackson, M.D. on June 11, 1955 in Elmhurst.  The story they told their children was that Mary fell in love with Douglas after hearing how wonderfully and quickly he performed the hit, “Walla-Walla-Washington” (possibly borrowing techniques from his mastery of the trumpet). After taking a long camping honeymoon around the Western United States, they moved to West Germany, living in Wiesbaden while Dr. Jackson served as a Captain in the Army.  After working at UCLA Medical Center as a doctor/nurse duo until their first two children were born, and then living for a couple of years in smalltown Illinois, Mary and Doug moved to the heart of their family's years together and their third child’s birthplace: Tulsa, Oklahoma.  It was there that the family was blessedly caught in the Revival Wave that rolled out from Southern California, striking with considerable power at one particular John Knox Presbyterian Prayer Group. The impact resonated throughout the families represented by the group, with its members continuing to share significant friendships (and an active “phone list”) with one another throughout their lives.   After Mary became widowed in 1981, she became active in the Tulsa Ski Club, additional Bible Studies, and working in Orthopedic Nursing at Tulsa’s renowned St. Francis Hospital.  When Mary married Edward Lantz Leonard, he joined her in camping adventures and relocating to California to be near her growing family. In many greeting cards sent to Mary over the years, friends and nursing colleagues regularly celebrated her being a LIGHT in their lives, a beam of joy that showed the vibrance and faithfulness of her Lord Jesus. Mary is living her ultimate prayer this very day. Those anticipating the reunion with Mary one day and for always include: daughter Jill Jackson and granddaughter Joy; daughter Jenny Jackson Hopkins, son-in-law, Jack, and grandchildren Heather Hopkins and Jake Hopkins; and sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) and Margaret (Midge).   Remains will be buried alongside James Douglas Jackson, M.D. and their son, James Douglas Jackson, Jr., in Victoria, Texas, at Memorial Park Cemetery.  In place of sending flowers, please share our love for Shepherd's Fold Ranch in Avant, Oklahoma.
