Obituary

Dorothy Sprau Gay (Dot)

Was born an identical twin April 28, 1939.  She grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa and enjoyed every minute of her college education at Iowa State University, where she picked up her nickname. Her degree in Dietetics nurtured her inquisitive mind for the rest of her life. Dot’s volunteerism started with her sorority, Chi Omega when she became president of her chapter.  She died on August 17, 2021.

Dot married Dick Sprau, her college sweetheart on May 28, 1961, the day after they both graduated from Iowa State University.  They had 3 wonderful children, Julie, Jeff (Angela) and Tim, the continuing joys of her life.  Dot leaves her special grandchildren Lauren, Nicole, Annelise, Colin, Erik, Finn, Sloan and Owen and her great grandson Elijah, all wonderful legacies. Dot is also survived by step-daughter Michelle Rogers (Sam), granddaughter Sarah Rogers and stepson Michael Gay.

Dot and Dick moved from Wayzata, MN to Rio Verde, AZ in 1993 to retire and play lots of golf.  Dot served on two country club boards and the Minnesota Women’s Golf Association board where she was twice president.  She also served on the board of Rio Verde Country Club including a term as president.

Several years later, Dot was introduced to Roger Gay, also widowed.  They married in June 2008 and began spending time in “Dot’s house” in Rio Verde, AZ and “Roger’s house” in Minnetonka, MN.  Their goals were lots of golf, travel and happiness, all of which they accomplished.

Dot loved her family and the great memories they created. She had the rare experience of carding two hole-in-ones during her lifetime. She made many dear friends through all of her adventures. She will be missed by all.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband Dick in 2003, her twin sister Donna in 2010, and her parents Omer and Mae Roth.  She also leaves brother Steve Roth (Ann), sister Becki Drahota  (Dick), nieces and nephews.

Dot’s memorial service will be September 18, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Wayzata Community Church, 125 Wayzata Blvd E., Wayzata, MN 55391
