Gerald Patrick MacCabe Obituary

It is with sad hearts we announce the gentle passing of our big brother, Gerald Patrick (Gerry) MacCabe age 77 on August 2, 2021. Gerald was the son of Gerald Maxwell MacCabe , Irene (McLeod)(MacCabe) Lamey and stepson of Willard Daniel Lamey. Gerry’s father was a tank operator with the Governor General’s Footguards of the Canadian Army, who died in the battle of Falaise Gap in August 1944, following the Normandy invasion just five months after Gerry was born. Gerry never met his father…until now. He lived his early years at the home of his grandparents, Stewart and Martha McLeod at Point Tupper, Cape Breton overlooking the C.N.R. trainyard. It was there that he formed his lifelong love of trains. He was an avid collector of Lionel and other trains and his train displays were works of art. Gerry lived his early school years in Halifax and then Stellarton. After starting a career in Customs Brokerage in Halifax, Gerry moved to Quebec where he lived and worked in Montreal and along the U.S./Canada border at Lacolle and Hemmingford,Quebec. There he made many lifelong friends. He returned to Stellarton in 2005 to be near his family. Gerry loved animals and owned dogs for much of his life. He loved connecting with people and his friendly, easy manner endeared him to all he met. Gerry had a strong faith and it carried him through all the challenges in life. He was a living symbol of simplicity, kindness and humility. He is survived by his brothers, Dan (Rita) Lamey, Miami Florida, Fr. Dennis Lamey, Sydney, Tom Lamey, Kings Head, sister Pam (Jamie) Morrison, Caribou River. Nieces, Kelsey, Catherine, Jill, and Sarah Grace. Nephews Dan and William. Gerry was a devoted son, grandson, brother, uncle and friend. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday at 11 A.M. from Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church . Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery , Port Hawkesbury . We must express our grateful thanks to the Palliative and Continuing Care Teams, the nurses and staff of the V.O.N and the many friends who supported Gerry and his family through this difficult time. We are so grateful for your loving support. We miss you Gerry. Rest in peace until we meet again.
