Charles J. Hickey

Charles J. Hickey II, of Windsor Township, PA, died August 2, 2021. He dearly loved his family: his wife Carole (Roemer) Hickey; son Charles J. Hickey III, his wife Susan (Sousley) and their children Jillian and Morgan; son Frederick R. Hickey, his wife Elizabeth (Lopez) and their children Clayton and Chase; and daughter Rebecca (Hickey) Grayek, wife of Jesse and their children Anna, Maxwell and Rachel; and nieces Kelly Schaeffer and Jean Cubello. His dear sister, Barbara Schaeffer, wife of Don Schaeffer, died October 2020. Charlie was born November 24, 1944 in Casper, Wyoming to the late Anna (Gallagher) and Charles J. Hickey. It was the start of a wonderful, adventurous life. Charlie grew up in Baltimore County, Maryland where he reveled in exploring nature and building model rockets. He received a BA degree in Biology/Education from McDaniel College and later an MA degree in Biology from Towson University. He served our country in the Vietnam War (1966-1967) and as an instructor for the Army Engineers at Ft. Belvoir, VA. Charlie taught science and math in Prince Georges Co., MD and Franklin High School in Baltimore Co., MD. His brilliant mind was intrigued by the new computers and had programmer management positions at several companies, including Graco Childrens Products in Elverson, PA. Then he founded his own software company Xetex Business Systems in Reading, PA. For business and pleasure, he loved world travel that included Australia, Hawaii, England, Ireland, Scotland, Peru, Africa, the Galapagos and Costa Rica. He was an avid photographer and had his photos published in nature books. He painted, acted in stage productions and played the piano, the guitar and saxophone. A resident of Elverson, PA for 33 years, he was active in church and in the community. He was Scoutmaster of Elverson Troop #37. Called to become a lay minister for the United Methodist Church, he preached sermons to reconcile science and religion at Mt. Carmel UMC St. Peters, PA. He was the M.C. for an Elverson swing band called Sound Advice that played at the Sunnybrook Ballroom and made Glenn Miller proud! Yes, he had a wonderful life. He said any years past 70 were icing on the cake but Charlie will be dearly missed.
