William (Hartman) Clutz, Artist, 88, of Rhinebeck NY, and previous long-time resident of Manhattan, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday July 26, 2021.

 

Born in Gettysburg, PA, and raised in Mercersburg, PA he was the son of the late Dr. Paul A and Catherine H. Clutz. 

 

William was most known for his paintings and pastels of pedestrians in light set in the urban landscape of New York City. His work was shown regularly in galleries on 57th Street from the early 60’s to the last in 2008, at Katharina Rich Perlow. He was elected into the National Academy of Art in 2005.   His work is represented in many museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, Museum of the City of NY, The Brooklyn Museum and the Hirshhorn Museum, DC and in numerous corporate and private collections, such as Chase Bank, NY, Bradley Family Foundation, Milwaukee WI and Mobil Corporation, Fairfax VA.  Fifteen of his major works comprise his legacy collection at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.   “Since the late 1950’s Mr. Clutz has been painting the street life of New York, simplifying its complexity to the brink of abstraction.” -Ken Johnson, New York Times. “If there ever was an Impressionist of the contemporary metropolis, it is surely Clutz, an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence’s.” -Gerrit Henry, Art News.

William was predeceased in death by his long-time beloved partner, John F. Sheehy, in 2007.

 

William leaves behind his devoted family, friends and his companion Pushkins Kitty. 

 

A memorial Mass will be held at the Good Shepherd Church, 3 Mulberry St., Rhinebeck, NY on Wednesday, August 4th at 11am. 

 

Burial of ashes immediately following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rhinecliff, NY.
