Becky Wanamaker Barton, 77 of Marble, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, July 25, 2021. She was born November 12, 1943 in Quantico, VA to the late George Sylvester and Vivian Ruth Sparrow Wanamaker. Becky had lived in Plant City, FL, where she remained until moving to Cherokee County in 1998. She was a graduate of the University of South Florida and later received her Masters from New York University. Becky had taught Drama and English with the Polk County Board of Education for over 30 years until retirement. She had fostered many children, volunteered with Guardian Ad Litem, and eventually adopted three sons of her own. She was a member of Marble Springs Baptist Church and greatly enjoyed her Sunday school. Becky loved to travel with friends and students. She spent her summers traveling abroad. She also became a sports fan in support of her boys. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Virginia “Ginny” Ruth Diaz and a brother, George Samuel Wanamaker. Becky is survived by her loving husband of 12 years, Joe Barton of Marble; three sons, Anthony Barton of Andrews, and Matthew and Isaiah Barton of Black Mountain, NC; Jack Newton, who she considered a son; one sister, Jan Walker of Plant City, FL; three grandchildren, Roan, Emerson, and Auna; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 2 PM Wednesday, July 28th, 2021 at Marble Springs Baptist Church with Dr. John Bailey and Reverend Scott Coldwell officiating. Interment was in Moss Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim Wood, Gary Rogers, Jeff Rowland, Mike Erwin, James Vaught, and Gary Galloway. The family received friends from 12:30 to 1:45 at Marble Springs Baptist Church, prior to the service. The family requested those attending to please wear a mask. The services were live streamed and can be viewed on the Ivie Funeral Home Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Cherokee County Guardian Ad Litem, 40 Peachtree Street, Murphy, NC 28906. Ivie Funeral Home, Andrews in charge of arrangements.
