Michael John Shore Obituary

Michael John Shore can now rest after a long and difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. Michael passed away on July 23, 2021 at the age of 42. His determination and optimism gave him, and those around him, the strength to never lose hope in the fight for his life. He also never lost hope that a cure would one day be found. He became a member of the National Capital Area chapter of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, joining with hundreds of other survivors and those who advocate on behalf of loved ones lost, to raise awareness and lobby Congress for additional funds for pancreatic cancer research. Michael was born and raised in North Carolina, calling Greensboro his hometown. He was active in both Boy Scouts and his home church, First Lutheran, both of which were foundational to his faith and the man he grew to become: kind; generous; humble; always putting the needs of others before his own. His chosen career path led him to Virginia Tech, from which he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. It was at Virginia Tech that his willingness to be tech support for friends paid off on the day he met his wife of nearly 15 years, Julie. Michael continued to live a life of faith and service as an active member of the Lutheran Student Movement at Luther Memorial Church, where he built many important, life-long friendships. He enjoyed his time serving with the youth group and as a representative for the Blue Ridge Region on the LSM-USA Council. After graduation, Michael remained in Virginia, where he worked as a programmer analyst for the government consulting firm, LMI, for 16 years. He enjoyed photography, vacations to the beach with his family, and tabletop gaming. He had a deep and abiding love for family, friends, Apple products, and terrible puns. Michael shared a love of Star Wars and geek culture with his daughter, Rachael, 13. His 10 year old daughter, Zoe, loved to sit with Michael and learn how to code and play Minecraft. In addition to his loving daughters and wife, Michael is survived by his mother, Rebecca Covington Shore; aunts and uncles, Vicki and Mark Shore, Cindy and Tom Hahn, Linda and Joe Reid Covington, Jr., Lezlie and Robert Covington; cousin, Emily Hahn and her son, Nathan; cousin, Cameron Shore Flowers, her husband, Steven, and their children, SJ and Shepard. He is preceded in death by cousins, Ray Hollowell and Rebecca Hahn; grandparents, J. Reid Covington, Margaret Fogleman Covington, Madeline Myers Shore, John Wade Shore, Jr.; father, John Wade Shore III. In lieu of flowers, Michael's family asks that you make a donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or to Capital Caring Health, which is the hospice that took such excellent care of Michael and his family.
