Barbara Jo Harlow Obituary

Barbara Jo Harlow of Shawnee, KS. passed into eternal rest on Thursday, July 22, 2021. Barbara (Barb, Barbo, Mom, Grandma, Gi-Gi) lived a long, very full, and happy life. She made a positive impression on countless hears along the way. To know her was to love her. Barbara was born February 27, 1940, to the late Wright King and Orpha King Million in Mountain Grove, Missouri. She had a fun childhood growing up with her little sister, whom she adored. Barbara graduated from Shelbina High School in 1958. She attended Kirksville Teacher College where she met Joe Calonge. They were married shortly after in Shelbina, MO. She started working at Southwestern Bell as a customer service representative. In 1972, Barbara was remarried to Larry Harlow. Shortly after, Barbara continued her career at Montgomery Ward as a recovery agent until her retirement from General Electric in 2004. Barbara was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Raymore. She raised three wonderful children to have families of their own and provided her with 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and a bonus grandchild! Her kids and grandkids meant the world to her, she spent time with them any chance she got and would always say “give me some sug (sugar)” when she wanted kisses. She wanted to do it all; Birthday Parties, weekends at the lake, slumber parties with the grand kids, the casino, cruises, going out to eat, helping care for their farm animals, trips to Branson, family reunions…She just loved to be in the middle of all the action, she wouldn’t have traded it for anything. These last few years were tough on her body, but if you knew Barbara, you knew that she pushed through with everything she had and did not complain one bit. She knew her kids and grandkids needed her for just a little bit longer, so she held on and pushed through, she was a fighter. I think if Barbara could share a verse with all of us right now it would be this: “This is my command-be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NLT Barbara is preceded in death by her husband Larry in 2010. She is also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Debbie Liggatt and her beloved puppy companion, Sophie. She is survived by her children, Lisa Boylan and husband Jeff; Dana Perkins and boyfriend, Tim Grossman; Joe Calonge and wife Karen; a sister, Donna Broughton and husband Charlie’ step daughter, Dana Lee Harlow; seven grandchildren, Derrick Young and wife Beth; Liana Muller and husband Matt; Nathan Young; Mollie Boylan; Joey Perkins; Jack Calonge; Alec Calonge; and GiGi to five great grandchildren, Hadleigh Young; Harper Muller; Phoenix Muller; Norah Muller; Jude Muller and many nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 14 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Shawnee. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Association – Heart of America Chapter; 3846 W. 75th Street. #4126; Prairie Village, KS 66208; American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd Street; Overland Park KS 66212; or to Great Plains SPCA; 5428 Antioch Drive, Merriam, KS 66202
