Dorothy June Whitmer Obituary

Dorothy June Whitmer, age 98, of La Crosse, passed away at her home on Friday, July 22, 2021. She was born at home in La Crosse, Wisconsin on June 4, 1923, to Ned and Pearl (Olson) Miller. Dorothy met her future husband at Fort McCoy, they dated until he was transferred overseas during World War II. During a leave, Dorothy traveled to Baltimore to meet Ken and his family, and they were married in Brooklyn, NY soon after; after 3 weeks, Ken returned overseas; following his discharge from the Army, they settled in the La Crosse area and were blessed with 8 children. Dorothy had several jobs: She worked at Loui Bantels and the Tosa Club, both restaurants, Montgomery Ward, Doerflingers, and Commas Department Stores. She worked at a photo shop on the northside of La Crosse and finally at Ed’s pharmacy on Caledonia Street. Dorothy loved to go dancing, she enjoyed playing cards with the Tuesday club girls, doing jigsaw puzzles and trying her luck at casinos. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Merrie (Jerry) Yehle of Holmen, Wisconsin; sons, Ken Jr. of Barefoot Bay, Florida, Don (Mary Kay) of Bandon, Oregon, Richard (Lynn) of Sebastian, Florida, William (Patti) of La Crosse, and Michael (Susan) Peoria, IL; grandchildren, Kim, Keith, Heather, Brent, Scott, Christine, Caroline, Matthew, Laura, Holly, Brian, Tina, and Wendy; great-grandchildren, Grace, Colin, Evalyn, Elayna, Bethany, Jackson, Brady, Caitlyn, Elizabeth, Ava, Davis, Madison, Bob, Noah, Bridger, June, Rachel, Erika, Clinton, Ryan, Anna, Lauren, Blake, Owen, Davonte, and Cameron; two great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her Husband Ken of 67 years, her two sons, Dennis and Randy; sisters, Inez Lynch, Doris Tarter, and Connie; and brothers, Donald Miller, Vernon Dillingham, and Jerry O’Leary. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021, at 11:00 am at Dickinson Family Funeral Home (401 Main Street, Onalaska) with Holly Hanback officiating. Friends and family are invited to a time for visitation from 10:00 am until the time service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum in La Crosse.
