Muriel Bohn Obituary

Muriel Bohn, 93, of Sioux Falls, SD and formerly of Bristol, SD passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021, at Grand Living at Lake Lorraine Assisted Living while in the care of Avera at Home Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday July 28, 2021, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol, SD and will be live-streamed on Fiksdal Funeral Service website. Burial will be at the Bristol Cemetery in Bristol. Visitation will be Tuesday 5-7 P.M. at Fiksdal Funeral Service. Muriel Catherine Ostroot was born on July 10, 1928, to Carl and Azalia (Ellis) Ostroot in Naples, South Dakota. She was the second of two girls born to Carl and Azalia. When she was three years old she moved with her family to Lake Preston, SD where her parents ran the Corner Store grocery store. She graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1946 then moved to Aberdeen to attend Northern State Teachers College where she received her Grade School Education Certificate. Her first teaching job was in 1948 in Bristol where she taught first and second grades for 2 years. She might have taught longer had it not been for the Bethesda Lutheran Church Choir where she met a young man (Burdell Bohn) who said he “really liked what he saw and heard”. They were married on August 28, 1949. She taught one more year before they started their family. Mom instilled in her girls a love of shopping and always looking your best. She wore many hats throughout her life. She was a farm wife and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She worked in the Bristol, Langford and Webster School Systems for a total of 17 years. She grew up singing, and loved singing in the Church Choir and with Burdell. They were a singing team. They were called upon to sing together for many events which they did for decades. She was actively involved in the church and community. They retired and moved from the farm to Bristol in 1990. They moved from their home in Bristol to the Grand Living Senior Living Community in Sioux Falls in 2019. They had been married for 71 years when Burdell died on March 16th of this year, a mere 4 months apart. Mom really loved when all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren visited. She loved them all and took interest in all of them and they all loved spending time with her as well. She was a remarkable role model for all of us and we are so grateful we were part of her life. She was always a great comfort in others’ time of need. She is leaving a legacy of sweetness and kindness and will be so very deeply missed every day by so many. We will see you again Mom, rest in peace. Muriel is survived by her children David (Sandy) Bohn of Ham Lake, MN, LuAnn (Jay) Van Hunnik of Keystone, SD, Barbara (Paul) Weidenbach of Parkston, SD and Carol (Jeff) Waring of Sioux Falls, SD, 8 grandchildren David (Katie) Bohn, Jeffrey (Kate) Bohn, Elizabeth (Kevin) Landwehr, Sarah (Chris) Rivera, Jacob (Stevi) Weidenbach, Amy (Aaron) Fox, Brandon (Carolyn) Smith, Cameron Smith, and 13 great grandchildren. Mom celebrated her 93rd birthday with her family on July 10, 2021. She passed in her sleep at her home at Grand Living at Lake Lorraine in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on July 23, 2021. She loved all the angels in her collection and now she is our angel watching over us. 2021 is a good year in Heaven! Please direct memorials to the family as they are establishing a memorial in honor of Muriel and Burdell at The Museum of Wildlife, Science & Industry of Northeast SD. Alternatively, memorials may be directed to Bethesda Lutheran Church - 314 3rd St S, Bristol, SD 57219.
