Irene Elen Hook, age 89, of Copperas Cove passed from this life during the morning hours of Thursday, July 22, 2021 at a Killeen hospital. She was born on the 18th day of January 1932 in Ironton, MO to parents Hemmer Edward and Flora Elen (Hughes) Henson. As a child, Irene grew up in rural Missouri during the Great Depression. She knew what hard times were like and the value of a dollar. Irene was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and she was also the oldest member at Open Book Fellowship in Killeen. Irene was an amazing seamstress and she quilted with love. She was a sweet, funny, and witty lady who loved to read books, dance, and spend as much time as she could with her grandchildren. Family was very important to Irene, she loved them deeply. Irene loved attending church because she loved the Lord so dearly. Irene, also known as “Sugar Grandma” or “Grandma Germany”, will be missed deeply by so many who loved her. She has been a resident of Copperas Cove since 1987. She is preceded in death by her parents Hemmer and Flora, sisters Beatrice Henson, Ellen Henson, and Bernice Henson, brothers Gib Henson and Eugene Henson, as well as granddaughter Alexandra Daniels. Irene leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters Paula Martin and Claudia Briggs both of Copperas Cove, son Billy Watkins of Bourbon, MO, five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Irene will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. at the Open Book Fellowship in Killeen with Pastor Walter White and Pastor Angel Valencia officiating. Hewett-Arney Funeral Home of Temple is entrusted with these arrangements.
