Thomas J. Lanich

THOMAS J. “TOM” LANICH, age 73, of Piqua, OH went to be with his LORD and Savior Jesus Christ on the evening of Tuesday, July 20, 2021 in the comfort and care of Grandview Kettering Hospital. Tom was born in Urbana, OH on November 7, 1947 to the late O. Paul and Esther M. (Runyan) Lanich. On October 8, 1976 in Casstown, OH, he married the late Marilyn Miller. Children include: Earl Watson Jr. of Piqua, OH, Eric Watson (Maggie) of Stevens Point, WI, Erin Cremean of Sandusky, OH, and Evan Watson (Carla) of Madison, SD. Grandchildren include: Jerrod Watson (Julie), Leah Watson, Anna Watson, Nina Cremean, Marissa Cremean, Camille Temprana (Isaac), Sierra Cremean, Caitlynn Belliveau (Mike), Evan Watson Jr., Cira Hunstad (Peter), and Clifford Thomas Watson. Great-Grandchildren include: Jocelyn Watson, Wesley Belliveau, Finnegan Belliveau, Abby Smay, Lainey Smay, Liam Temprana. Siblings include: a brother: Doug (Trish) Lanich of Urbana and a sister: Joy (Bruce) Langen of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tom was preceded in death by his parents: Paul and Ester Lanich; his brother: Edward (Pat) Lanich, and his grandparents: Rev. Edward and Mary Runyan and Oscar and Orva Lanich. Tom graduated from Graham High School, St. Paris, OH. He then received his Bachelor of Science in Education from The Ohio State University and his Master’s Degree in Education from Wright State University. Tom taught at Springcreek Elementary School in Piqua, OH alongside his wife Marilyn for 30 years from 1968-1998. He continued his teaching career at Northwood Intermediate School, Sidney before retiring. Tom was a member of Hardin United Methodist Church, Sidney. He loved to sing in the choir. Tom was also a very gifted organ player and loved to play for the church. Along with his wife, Tom would host six parties annually between Thanksgiving and New Years for their numerous friends and family. He loved to travel and he traveled to England, Japan, Cuba, Canada, and Mexico along with forty-eight of the fifty states, including Hawaii and Alaska, with two Alaskan cruises. He made several cross-country trips to the west coast, stopping at anything which looked interesting along the way. Tom loved to travel with Marilyn to see the world. Tom’s family will receive friends from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, June 28, 2021 at Hardin United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Chalk, Rev. Steve Hunsucker, and Rev. Keith Smallenbarger officiating. Twila Haynes will be playing the piano at the funeral to compliment Tom’s love of playing the organ. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to Hardin United Methodist Church, 6073 Hardin Wapakoneta Road, Sidney, OH 45365 or American Cancer Society, Southwestern Regional Office, 2808 Reading Road, Cincinnati, OH 45206. The family would like to give a special thanks to Sue Phillis, Linda Blankenship, Kathy Staggers, and the Kettering Nursing staff for their special care of Tom. He was my teacher he use to read to us. I remember him being A kind teacher .He is the one teacher that I really liked .He cared about his students at Spring Creek .I'm 50 but I still remember him reading to us and his voice.

Sorry to hear the passing of Tom. I had Tom as Teacher his last year of teaching at springcreek. I also had the pleasure of caring for Marilyn for 6 months through hospice of Miami county. He and she was always nice and very welcoming. Prayers for the family!
