Sclena Pearl Sizemore Griffin Black Mountain, North Carolina Obituary

Sclena Pearl Sizemore Griffin

Sclena Pearl Sizemore Griffin was a joy in our lives while on this earth, but God needs her as an Angel now. Sclena was the seventh of eight children who grew up in cotton mills in Spartanburg, SC and Gastonia, NC, post-Depression Days. She was a proud Korean War Navy Veteran. Of her six brothers, five joined and served in the military to honor their country. It was fitting for Sclena to do the same. She enjoyed life, loved many, and was loved by ALL. She was the first in her family to graduate high school at Lowell High in South Carolina. Seeking adventure and travel she decided to join the Navy. Her first duty station in San Francisco is where she married. Upon separation from the military, she and her husband moved to Florida and had four children: Mary, Katrina, Randy and Caroline. Her continued thirst for knowledge lead her to earn an Associate's Degree at the age of fifty. Her life was colorful and full of childhood adventures. Travel, cooking, family and telling stories were some of her favorite things. However, the role she enjoyed most was being "Nanny" to seven grandchildren. She filled their lives with stories of history, life, and so much love. Her memory was phenomenal, she could recite Shakespeare, famous speeches and bible verses. A proud North Carolina native she would often remind everyone the Latin interpretation on the North Carolina state flag says, “Esse quam videri”, “To be, rather than to seem to be.” She lived her life in this same manner….no pretending with Sclena. All that loved her will celebrate her life on what would be her 87th birthday, Saturday, August 21, 2021. Services will be held at the Harwood Home for Funerals & Cremation Services, 208 West State Street, Black Mountain, NC, at 1:00pm.
