Georgia Sumrall Obituary

In the morning hours of Sunday July 18, 2021 longtime resident of Orange Park, Florida, Georgia Sumrall, passed away peacefully at Palagio Senior Living facility located at 1525 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, Florida. Georgia Sumrall nee Gottberg was born in the Bronx, NY November 22, 1930 and passed from this life to rejoin her dearly departed July 18, 2021 at the age of 90 years. Georgia relocated with her family from New York to Strickland’s Landing, Kingsley Lake near Starke, Florida during her high school years where she met and fell in love with her future husband of 65 years, Jack G. Sumrall. Following her graduation from Clay High School in Green Cove Springs, Florida Georgia and Jack, on May 20, 1950, took the vows of holy matrimony at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina thus beginning a 65 year marriage of friendship, love, honor and respect between the couple and Georgia’s life as an army wife with just one short break from the army from 1962 – 1964 until Jack retired from active duty in 1972. Four of Georgia’s five children were born in army hospitals at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Fort Dix, New Jersey and Fort Monroe, Virginia. Only one daughter, Amy, was born at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine. Georgia made home in keeping with a military wife’s traditions in Virginia, New Jersey, Maine, France, Mississippi, Louisiana, California and Florida before finally settling in 1968 to Jacksonville, Florida back to near where she had originally met husband Jack. For her family, home not only became a place of beauty, but more, knowing home is always in the heart. Always a devout Catholic Georgia and family became parishioners at Sacred Heart Parish in Jacksonville. When Georgia and Jack ultimately moved to Orange Park, Florida in the mid 1970-ies they became highly active members of the St. Catherine of Siena parish. Georgia became known for photographic and reporting skills and accepted a position from then pastor Father Haut as the parish historian. It was once said that if you met Georgia Sumrall you would know her own entire life’s history before you parted. Georgia was also a graduate of the Diocesan Ministry Formation and Georgia also remained active with the parish small groups for the remainder of her life. Georgia was the last and longest living member of her immediate Gottberg family. Georgia is survived by her five children: Kathleen Marie Marquis (Richard) of St. Augustine, Florida, Jack Glendon Sumrall, Jr. (Tammy) of Guyton, Georgia, Anita Gayl Gouge (Michael) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Amy Eugenia Sumrall of Jacksonville, Florida and Carol Ann Pate (Michael) of Green Cove Springs, Florida. Georgia is also survived by 14 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren as well innumerable friends and relations. Visitation for Georgia Sumrall will be at the Jacksonville Memory Gardens Monday, July 26th between the hours of 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be concelebrated by Fr. Puga and Fr. Haut on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at 11:00 am at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. A luncheon will be provided at the St. Catherine’s Church Hall after the celebration of the Mass.
