Elizabeth A. Griffin Obituary

Elizabeth A. “Betsy” (Burns) Griffin, 77, a longtime resident of Framingham died Sunday, July 18, 2021 following a brief illness. Born in Ft. Bliss, TX, she was the daughter of the late John F. & Elizabeth (DeFeudis) Burns, and the beloved wife of Lawrence J. Griffin.

Betsy was a 1962 graduate of Agawam High School, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Regis College. She briefly taught in St. Thomas, returned home and worked for Channel 22 in Springfield while finishing her teaching certificate.  For the next 35 years, she taught middle and high school in the Framingham Public Schools.

As much as she loved teaching, Betsy loved to sing. She was a Cantor at St. George Parish where she was also a member of the choir. She sang with the Regis College Alumni Chorus and doing so traveled to Portugal, Spain, and Italy. In her retirement, she enjoyed teaching English as a second language to various groups, even online during the pandemic. She was a helper in the truest sense.

Besides her beloved husband Lawrence, Betsy is survived by her dear son Matthew of Framingham, her siblings, John Burns of CA, Sheila Burns of CA, and Eileen Burns Forman of IL, many loved nieces and nephews, and countless former students (who she also considered “her kids”).

Family and friends will honor and remember Betsy’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St. Framingham on Monday, July 26th from 4-8 P.M. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday morning in St. George Church, 74 School St. Saxonville at 10 o’clock. Interment will follow in Edgell Grove Cemetery, Framingham.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Betsy’s name to: Friends of the Framingham Library, www.framinghamlibrary.org, or to the Regis College Alumni Chorus.
