<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Francis Roy &ldquo;Fran&rdquo; Mentzer, 82, of Patton, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at UPMC Altoona surrounded by his loving family.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was born in Altoona on November 15, 1938, the son of the late John Earl and Bernadine Helen (Lockard) Mentzer. In 1997 he married Janet Louise Stouffer in the Poconos.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Surviving are his wife, Janet; two children: Terrance B. &ldquo;Terry&rdquo; Mentzer and Steven F. Mentzer and wife, Rebecca, all of Altoona; two stepsons: Robert L. Creamer Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Duncansville and Jody L. Creamer and wife, Dianne, of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Brandi Hale, Amanda Hoke, Tobias Mentzer, Stanley Hoke, Troy Mentzer, Marissa Mentzer and Madison Mentzer; six step grandchildren: Danielle Conway, Ashley, Kirsten, Heather and Shanna Creamer and Trevor Hogans; three great-grandchildren: Sophia, Colby and Charlotte; and six step great-grandchildren: Madison, Braydon, Jaxon, Noah, Natalie and Finn.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was preceded in death by four brothers: Dave, John, Donald and William Mentzer; and one sister, Mary Jane Caldwell.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fran attended Altoona High School and joined the United States Navy in 1956 aboard the USS William A. Lee until 1959. He worked at Warnaco Sportswear from 1960 until its shut down in 1992. He then worked at HR Carpenter until his retirement in 2001. Following his retirement, Fran enjoyed driving for Health Ride of Northern Cambria for seven years.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Francis was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He was proud of the home he built and spent countless hours of upkeep and improvements to make it their dream home.</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;He was a passionate fan of Penn State and the Pittsburgh Steelers football. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fran will be deeply missed by all that knew him.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A funeral service with military honors will be held at 12 noon Friday, July 23, 2021, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona, with the Rev. William Bonin officiating. Interment will be made at Seven Stars Cemetery.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602 or to Centre Wildlife Care, 148 Custred Lane, Port Matilda, PA 16870.</p>
