Shirley A. Smith Obituary

It is with a heavy heart, I must share the passing of my mother, Shirley A Smith. Mom passed away Sunday 7/18/2021. Shirley was born in New Lebanon Ohio, She lived in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania throughout her life. Shirley was Survived by Ed Smith her husband, Tim and his wife Melinda, and Doug and his wife Amy Grand Children Kristy and Katie Smith, and Bethany Whisel, and other family/near family members Beckie (Markle) Moyer, Scott and Jacquelyn Wilkerson, Allison Smith Barnes, Kristen Smith Glatfelter and their families Shirley moved to New Freedom right before the New Freedom PA Centennial celebration where she was very active in the events. Over the years Shirley has been very active and giving within her community. She was involved with Dances and tournaments at Bon Air Country Club, She was active in many Church activities, Making quilts or apple butter, Church bible schools and so much more. She supported and did work with , Friends of the Library, New Freedom Women's Club, New Freedom Lioness Club/New Freedom Lions Club. TOPASYC, She did many activities at the New Freedom Carnival, Making home made soups, selling ride tickets, She worked the Bingo prize areas for years. How many of you purchased a raffle ticket from her taking a chance on the Harley, or on the car or truck the Lions club used to raffle, There are only possibly one or two more people that may have sold more of these tickets than she did! She was involved in many activities at the NF Community Center over the years, putting on dances as fundraisers for many different organizations, Working the German Fest. Many knew her for her piles of wrapped secret packages at the Lioness Club Christmas Bazaar!. She organized and participated in many road rallies with various organizations. She helped many charities, New Life for Girls, Tender Care, House of Hope, New Hope Ministries. She was a Member of the VFW Auxiliary and involved with the American Legion. One project that was special her was her work with the Lebanon VA Hospital where she organized a joint project between the Lioness club and the VFW where they would go and sponsor a bingo and a feed for the solders at the hospital. I can not possibly recall all that she participated in, She made helping others her thing and she really has given of herself so many times and touched the lives of so very many. Some of you knew her from her working at Kmart Shrewsbury in the apparel department, She also did some work at New Freedom Department Store. Shirley never met a stranger, she had a gift for gab and could talk with anyone! Mom will be missed by so very many, It is my hope many of you can smile and remember something nice Shirley did, or something she told you that made you smile or laugh, rather than being saddened by her passing. Shirley will continue with her tradition of giving by donating her body to science with the hopes that research and study will help others in some way. There will be no traditional funeral and services. We will be having a casual memorial at a yet to be determined date. More information to come at a later time.
