Chesapeake – Russell Pershing Guthrie, Jr., 74, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2021. He was born in Altavista, VA to the late Russell and Pauline Guthrie. Russell was a graduate of Old Dominion University. He served as an Engineering Tech for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 35 years. Additionally, he was a jeweler for 43 years. Russell was an avid gardener. His passion was tropical plants. He especially loved planting and grafting plumeria and palm trees. Every year, his backyard was transformed into an oasis. Russell was known and loved for his great sense of humor. His signature laugh was recognized by all who knew him. Russell never met a stranger. Once you met Russell, you never forgot him. He is survived by his loving wife, of 51 years, Ruth Guthrie; a son, Sam Guthrie; a daughter, Jennifer Shaffer and husband Jeffrey; a sister, Linda Burns; and five grandchildren, Joslin, Addison, Isabella, David and Asher. In addition, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A graveside service will be held at 12 PM Tuesday, July 20, at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by Cantor Wendi Fried. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
