Duane James Herrlein, 85, formerly of Kimball, SD passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Society - Corsica. Memorial Services with Military Honors are 10:30 AM Friday, July 16, 2021 at Mount Funeral Home in Platte. A private family Committal Service will be held at St. Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Kimball, SD. Duane was born on July 12, 1936 to Hubert and Mabel (Arends) Herrlein in Chamberlain, South Dakota, he was the first of two kids. The family lived in Kimball, South Dakota. During the summers, Duane spent time on the farm with his Uncle Ralph Arends. Duane graduated from Kimball High School in 1954. After graduating high school, he attended Springfield College for one year. In 1956, Duane joined the United States Marines and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California until 1958. Duane married Teresa Hanson in January 1959. To this union 8 children were born: Julie, Kathy, Dorothy, James, David, Kenneth, Mary, and Matthew. Duane spent most of his life as a truck driver. He received three One Million Mile Awards for driving a million miles with no accidents. He drove for over 50 years for the Van Zee family. He hauled gravel, livestock, grain, and flatbed. Duane is survived by his children: Julie (Dean) Anderson of Box Elder, SD, Dorothy (Bob) Kuipers of Tyndall, SD, James Herrlein of Rapid City, SD, David (Tabitha) Herrlein of Parkston, SD, Kenneth Herrlein of Platte, SD, Mary (Doug) Nelson of Alexandria, SD and Matthew Herrlein of Sioux Falls, SD; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Janet Docksteader; and nieces and nephews. Duane is preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Herrlein; parents, Hubert and Mabel Herrlein; wives: Teresa and Christine Bobbie; and brother-in-law, Darrel Docksteader.
