Thomas Gerald Wiggins

Thomas Gerald Wiggins was one of 11 children born to loving parents, Ralph and Evelyn Wiggins on December 21, 1942 in Wilmington, Delaware. Thomas was educated in the Wilmington (DE) school district from elementary to high school, graduating from Howard High School in 1960. Community Activist/Organizer: Thomas served briefly in the Merchant Marines after high school. He went on to become a community organizer and activist. Thomas was involved in many community action projects throughout the City of Wilmington in the 60s and 70s. As an active member in the City, Thomas held memberships in the following organizations: The Southstreeters youth group, Black Man's Development, The Black Panthers, and Brothers and Sisters of Unity. Thomas was also active in the arts as a member of Christina Cultural Arts Center in Wilmington, Delaware. He served with the W.E.A.C.T. Work Program. Thomas loved African art, music, and fashion; he loved playing Bongo Drums, listening to Marvin Gaye, Gil Scott Heron and Hugh Masekela, while displaying Marcus Garvey on his wall. Thomas enjoyed many other activities such as chest, basketball, and hand ball. He also enjoyed going to Jazz Festivals and Fishing. As a skilled craftsman, Thomas Gerald was skilled in electrical, carpentry and maintenance work. He spent 25 years in maintenance, eventually becoming a Maintenance Supervisor for Christina School District before retiring in 1987. Family: Thomas, also affectionately known to everyone as Weasel, loved family. He had his ways but both family and friends can always say he would help you and he had the talent of bringing a smile to your face by just seeing him smile. In September of 1966 Thomas married Wanda Wiggins of Wilmington, DE and has surviving children, Gerald, Tasha Wiggins Malone, and Nikki Williams from Wilmington, DE/Gambia, Africa; Jasmine Harvey and Lacole Chamber from Texas; grandchildren, Gerald Jr., Carlene, Wanda, Isaiah, Janika, Sade, and Jahnise; great-grandchildren, Nile, Azari, and Deyjean (Sonny); surviving sisters, Suzanne, Maxine, Maureen, Pamela, and Sibyll, and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by five (5) brothers, Byron, Ralph, Edward, Meredith and Conrad Wiggins. Thomas Gerald Wiggins, father, brother, and friend, leaves many who loved him and will miss him. Remember him and see him in his children. So rest in peace my brother, rest in peace.... Memorial Service will be 11:00 AM on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at Congo Legacy Center, 501 W. 28th Street, Wilmington, DE.
