Mary T. Collins Belmont, Massachusetts Obituary

Mary T. Collins

Mary T. Collins, a longtime resident of Cambridge MA, died peacefully Saturday, April 16, 2016 at St Patrick's Manor nursing home in Framingham, MA. Mary was born in Cambridge MA. in 1920 to Joseph and Delia (Coen) Collins. She is survived by 3 of her 4 siblings: Eleanor C. Hogan of Framingham, MA, John "Jack" Collins of Burlington, MA and Sr. Elizabeth Collins S.B.S. of Bensalem, PA. Her brother, Joseph, predeceased her. Mary never married but was the doting aunt to 12 nieces and nephews, and many grand nieces and nephews. Mary's early teaching career entailed learning Spanish and moving to Panama to teach soldiers' children from 1953 to 1954. After returning, she continued to volunteer in Boston, working with the Catholic Spanish speaking community, speaking fluent Spanish until she moved to Carmel Terrace in Framingham at the age of 86. After Panama, she returned to Cambridge and began a 35 year long career teaching in the Quincy School System. She looked forward to her many international travels, touring Ireland and visiting family there many times. She frequently travelled with her youngest sister, Sr. Elizabeth Collins. She was also an avid golfer and in her retirement took annual winter trips to Florida with her friends to golf. Mary was a wonderful sister, aunt, cousin, friend, co-worker to many. She often opened her home to relatives far and near whenever they were in town and sponsored her Irish relatives to come to America. Mary will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held April 30 at St Patrick's Manor Nursing Home Chapel in Framingham MA. At 10:00 am, followed by burial in North Cambridge Catholic Cemetery in Cambridge. For any expressions of sympathy, please donate to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament at 1663 Bristol Pike, Bensalem PA. 19020
