James 'Grant' McNain
Mr. James ‘Grant’ McNain of Innisfail, Alberta passed away at the Innisfail Health Centre on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the age of 79 years. J. Grant McNain was born on November 23, 1941 in Goderich, Huron County, Ontario to Laura and James McNain. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Vera and his children, his daughter Alicia McNain of Innisfail, and her children, Alexis McNain and James Turcotte; his daughter Laura-Kate (Byron) Romanoff of Red Deer and their children Nathan and Jaxson; and his stepdaughter, Crystal Darrah (Tyler) of Innisfail, and her children, Keyshawn Darrah and Christian Darrah; and stepson Marty Darrah. He will also be sadly missed by his sisters, Laurie and Helen; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Grant was predeceased by his parents, Laura and James and his brothers, Bob and Murray. He grew up “out east” on a farm and was a whole bunch of things. He was a gentleman of cowboys, driving off in his Cowboy’s Cadillac. He was a hard worker, with a mind so unique and he lived a great life of nothing but the best. He briefly worked at the Bank of Montreal before he moved across the country at a young age to work in Alberta. He worked as a bartender in Edmonton, as a car salesman for a short period of time and found his passion in construction. As the owner of McNain Pipeline Services, he worked in heavy equipment construction, pipelining, and agriculture. He always went home to help on the farm. In Ontario he was known as the seasonal "fall guy" always arriving in time to help with the harvest and fall tillage for his brother. He had a gifted mind for numbers and dates and his curiosity for learning always meant he was willing to lend a hand. He loved to talk to people, create new friendships, and reminded his family of a sailor since he had friends at every port! He was so proud of his grandchildren and always spoke about those “out west” when he went home to help on the farm. He loved driving (he was an expert at distracted driving) and would go miles out of his way to visit with friends and family along the road. Grant would phone out of the blue because he was nearby and wanted to see if you had time to chat. He also loved attending crib tournaments and poker games for entertainment in his retirement. He had memberships with heavy equipment operator unions, Royal Canadian Legion, and Bowden Friendship Club. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was a true gentleman. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Bowden Friendship Centre, Bowden, Alberta. A private Family Graveside Service will be held at the Bowden Cemetery.
