Landis K. Marttila Obituary

Landis, who served as an IBEW 1245 business representative and senior business representative for 30 years, died at his home in San Francisco on June 9. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara, sister Julie (Rick), daughter Anikka, sons Maximilian (Jenny) and Joshua Justice, grandchildren, Amanda (John), Steven (Stefani), and Yuri, as well as great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Ella, Giada, Avery, Jackson, and Lane. He deeply loved his family, friends, and his Union. He fought for justice in work and outside of work as well, even after retirement. The thing he enjoyed most in life was spending time with his loved ones, especially his wife of 50 years. He was known for his kind heart, his ability to listen and empathize, and his abundance of work ethic and style. Landis represented members at PG&E, in Outside Construction, and Line Clearance Tree Trimming. He was active in many union organizing drives and political campaigns, and was a reliable presence on the picket line when other unions asked for solidarity. He represented IBEW 1245 on the San Mateo Central Labor Council for many years. He also represented IBEW 1245 at the California Public Utilities Commission. He was deeply interested in safety and benefits for all union workers and laid the groundwork for many improvements in their wages and benefits. He was successful in many of his union campaigns including two drives against municipalization of PG&E in San Francisco. He was enjoying his retirement when he suddenly died of natural causes. A memorial service will be held at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary located at 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City, CA on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. Viewing at 9:00am, service at 10:00am. Internment at the Serbian Cemetery 1801 Hillside Boulevard, Colma, CA at 11:30am. For those who prefer a donation in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Landis’s name to Precita Eyes Muralist Association, Inc. in San Francisco.
