Charles H. Hochmuth

Charles Henry Lasserre Hochmuth, 74, of Arlington, MA, died peacefully on May 31, 2021 after a short illness. Born in Atlanta on May 15, 1947, 20 minutes after his twin sister, Charles was the son of the late Col. Milton S. Hochmuth, a career U.S. Army officer, and Genevieve L. Hochmuth. A graduate of Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in Maryland and Johns Hopkins University, where he participated in its ROTC program, Charles was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War as a psychological operations field team leader, one year after his father served in the same war. After the Army, Charles joined the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC, as a systems analyst, specializing in the DEC PDP-11 and later the VAX. In 1979, he moved to the Boston area and became the second employee at InterSystems Corp., a database software maker for the healthcare industry, where Charles was an information technology director for over 40 years. Now headquartered in Cambridge, InterSystems is a global, 1,500-employee company. Among Charles’ passions were still-life photography, antique car and motorcycle restoration (including a 1956 DeSoto and a 1972 Motto Guzzi), military history, fine food and wine, cat videos, and talking loudly with friends and family about the many things he knew, and the few things he didn’t. He loved the French language, which he spoke fluently, and French culture, having partly grown up in France. He especially enjoyed spending vacations in St. Jean-de-Luz and Ciboure, France, where he could spend quality time with his uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Mary Stack of Arlington, and son, Philippe Hochmuth and his wife Sarah of Maynard. Known as “Pops” to his beloved grandchildren, Lillian and Maxwell, Charles was also a loving brother to his twin sister, Catherine LeFever of Melbourne, FL, as well as Henry Hochmuth of Luxembourg, and Claire Lohmann and her husband, Jörg Lohmann, of Ciboure. Relatives, coworkers, and friends are invited to visit the DeVito Funeral Home, 1145 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington, MA, on Thursday, June 3, 3-7 p.m. Funeral mass will occur on Friday, June 4 at 11:30 a.m., at St. Agnes Church, 32 Medford St., Arlington, MA.
