Ruth Huffman Austin

Ruth Huffman Austin, 82, of Hickory, passed away, Tuesday, November 11, 2015 at her residence. Born July 27, 1933 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Laura Emiline Heavner and Ulysses Scyler Huffman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brice Austin; two brothers: Roy and Robert Huffman; and a grandson, Justin Clontz. A member of Longview Baptist Church, she had retired from Century Furniture in Hickory. Mrs. Austin enjoyed gardening, working in her yard and in her home but her true joy was spending time with her family. She is survived by a son, Steve Austin of Hickory; daughter, Karen Clontz of Hickory; brother, Clarence Huffman of Hickory; grandchildren: Ashley Beatty of Hickory, Lauren Clontz of Hickory; great-grandchildren: Brett Watts and Landon Foard, both of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2015 in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, November 13, 2015 from 6 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Hospice for all their help and a special thanks to her nurses and caregivers: Denise Gregor, Jean Rowe and Kathy Workman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658.
