Mildred B Pugh Obituary

Mildred B. Pugh departed this life on May 9, 2021, in Newark, NJ, at the age of 106. She lived a blessed and fruitful life. Mildred B. Pugh was born October 15, 1914 in Bertie County, NC to the late Paul and Wade (Bunch) Bennett. She was the older of two children. She completed study at John B. Bond School in Lewiston, NC and also attended W. S. Creecy School. Mildred joined Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston, NC at an early age and attended regularly. She was initiated as a charter member of the Lewiston Light Chapter of The Order of Eastern Star #329. After relocating, she joined Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City, Rev. Isaac S. Cole, pastor. She was a devoted member and usher. She later joined Zion Hill Baptist Church in Newark, NJ and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship and Mothers’ Board, under current Pastor, Rev. Douglas Williams, III. She was also inducted into the Zion Hill Women’s Hall of Fame. Mildred worked on the farm in her earlier years. She relocated to Baltimore, MD and began working as a domestic in Valley Stream, NY, Atlantic City, and Ventnor, NJ. Mildred retired in 1975 and relocated to Newark, NJ to live with her daughter, Shirley and son-in-law, the late Willie J. Bazemore, Jr. Her hobbies were reading and reciting poetry; she also liked to watch TV, especially game shows and comedies. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 23:1, “The Lord is my Shepherd and I shall not want.” Her favorite hymns were “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross,” “What A Friend We Have in Jesus,” and “Amazing Grace.” Mother Pugh gave new meaning to the phrase, “You can be fabulous at any age.” Just last month, the doctor asked her a general care question and she responded, “Yes, I know the 23rd Psalm” and proceeded to recite it without hesitation. Mildred is survived by her devoted daughter, Shirley J. Bazemore of Newark, NJ; two grandchildren, Marvin J. Bazemore of Newark, NJ and Glorious J. Bazemore of Washington, DC; one great-granddaughter, Nkenge Temoney (Freddie) and three great-great-grandchildren, Mason, Symone, and Reece; one great-great-great granddaughter, Zariah; three nieces, Barbara Moore (Larry) of Lewiston, NC, Gwendolyn Bennett of Clinton, MD, Lola Ferguson (Craig) of Cheltenham, MD; four nephews, James Bennett (Gwen) of Newport News, VA, Berace Bennett of St. Louis, MO, William Bennett of Lewiston, NC, and Ronald Bennett (Jennifer) of Lewiston, NC, as well as a host of great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins. Mildred was also preceded in death by her dutiful son-in-law, Willie J. Bazemore, Jr. and beloved brother, James C. Bennett (Buddy) and sister-in-law, Ebbie Lee Bennett and her beloved cousin, Laura Farley. Mildred adored her church family and made friendships while also gaining many “daughters.” She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
