<p>Mr. James Oakland Cockerham, 95, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 13, 2021.</p> <p>James was born November 26, 1925 in Grayson County, VA to the late Lonnie and Lizzie Cockerham.&nbsp; He proudly served his country in the European theatre in WWII, earning the Combat Infantry Award as well as the Bronze Star. &nbsp;James loved his Lord and family and served them well.&nbsp; In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, and beloved wife, Virginia.</p> <p>James is survived by his daughter, Beverly Riley (Dave); grandchildren, Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Riley (Heather) and Kristi Michels (Lance); great-grandchildren, Caroline, Grace, Sam, Abigail, and Thea; sisters, Frances King and Jeanie Brewer; and numerous nieces and nephews.</p> <p>A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 10 AM at Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Galax, VA, with Pastor Lance Michels officiating.</p> <p>In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Youth Camps For Christ Inc., 190 Magnum Lane, Littleton, NC&nbsp; 27850.&nbsp;</p>

Mr. James Oakland Cockerham, 95, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 13, 2021.

James was born November 26, 1925 in Grayson County, VA to the late Lonnie and Lizzie Cockerham.  He proudly served his country in the European theatre in WWII, earning the Combat Infantry Award as well as the Bronze Star.  James loved his Lord and family and served them well.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, and beloved wife, Virginia.
