Charles A. Warren, Jr. Obituary

Charles “Charlie” A. Warren Jr., 81, of West Granby, Conn., died May 8, 2021, in Avon, Conn. He was the husband of Leslie Rose Warren. Charlie was born Sept. 7, 1939, in Worcester, Mass., to Eleanor Marguerite (Sennott) and Charles A. Warren. As a child, he spent time at a farm, where they raised chickens and sold eggs. While in school, he was in 4-H and raised pigs, goats, and cows. He graduated from Rockville High School in Connecticut in 1957, where he excelled academically, and from the University of Connecticut with a B.S. in civil engineering in 1961. He received a partial scholarship for each of his four years of college. In 1966, he moved to West Granby, where he settled and built a home with his first wife, Connie, and opened Warren Engineering Reports, which he operated until 2018. He was married to Connie for 30-plus years. In addition to his civil engineering business, he provided snow plowing services for more than 50 years, as well as stump grinding and wood chipping services. He was a firefighter for more than 50 years, first in Vernon and then later in Granby, where he joined the Lost Acres Fire Department. He was active with the department until about 2014 at which time he became a life member. In addition to his involvement in the fire department, Charlie spent more than 50 years in ski patrol. He began in 1959 at the Springfield Ski Club and was part of the Springfield Hill Captains Team from 1963-69. He joined Ski Sundown in New Hartford and was recognized for 50 years of service in 2009 at which time he was inducted into its Hall of Fame. Throughout the years, he advanced through multiple ski patrol courses and became a WEC instructor in 1989 and served in several capacities at the ski area. He is believed to be the first person to call for Life Star assistance at Ski Sundown. He and Leslie portrayed Santa and Mrs. Claus for 15 years. Charlie served as a volunteer first aider at the Talcott Mountain Music Festival in Simsbury for 20 years, stepping away from it in his early to mid-70s to care for Leslie and her health challenges. A lifelong learner and advocate for education, Charlie was a longtime past volunteer state and chapter assistant coordinator for Math Counts, a role he held for 30 years. He was a member of the local, state, and national chapters of the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, and a member of the National Fire Protection Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching, and playing along to “Jeopardy,” sharing jokes, reading, helping others and spending time with family and friends. He and Leslie were members of Barkhamsted Congregational Church but often visited and participated in activities at other churches in the community. Charlie is survived by three children and three grandchildren; a sister and her children and their families; and the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of his late second wife, Celeste, and his present wife Leslie, all of whom he proudly recognized. A Memorial Service will be held at a future date to be announced.
