Elinor Vander Ark Obituary

On Wednesday, May 5, 2021, Elinor Vander Ark went to be with the Lord at the age of 90. She was born on August 3, 1930, in Churchill, Montana to Henry and Minnie (TeSelle) Kimm. She was the seventh of nine children. Growing up on a farm in Manhattan, she often recalled many fond memories like milking cows, riding horses, and helping her mother. She attended Manhattan Christian School, Gallatin High, and Manhattan High School. She went on to graduate from Calvin College in 1954 and worked as a medical technician. She married Jay C. Vander Ark in 1953, whom she had known since childhood, and they had four children. Jay was initially in the Air Force as a chaplain and continued to serve throughout their ministry. They served in the CRC Home Missions and small churches for the remainder of their career, ministering in Wichita Falls, Texas; Hayward, California; Boulder, Colorado; Flanders Valley, New Jersey; and then Longmont, Colorado. Elinor always had a heart for service to those in need. She passionately but quietly worked to serve the members of their congregations by teaching Sunday School, creating and teaching women's bible studies, organizing Vacation Bible School, and serving whatever needs arose in those churches. She also worked in her community with the Crisis Pregnancy Center, participated in Bible Study Fellowship at its beginning both in California and Colorado, and wrote bible study curriculum for all ages. She served her family and community well. If you saw her yard and garden, you would know she was a master gardener. She sewed many clothes for her family, canned and froze vegetables tirelessly, and refused to feed her children sugar or refined food even before it was popular. Bran was usually added in all baked goods, and anything sweet was only made to give away! At retirement she and Jay moved back to Churchill, connecting with old acquaintances, family, and making new friends. She loved her community. Even after losing her husband 20 years ago, she continued to be heavily involved with her church, participating in multiple committees, bible studies, and prayer. She also started her framing business at the age of 63, again a service to her community and continued to frame even until a month before her death. Elinor was preceded in death by her husband, Jay; her sisters, Evelyn Triemstra, Dorothy Flikkema, Marian LeFebre, Helene Hathaway; and her brothers, Wilbur Kimm, Allan Kimm, and Harold Kimm. She is survived by her children and their families, Kim and Gayle (Kuiper) Vander Ark, Julie and Doug Van Hofwegen, Cindy Vander Ark, and Wes and Cynthia (Strimple) Vander Ark. Added to that list are 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Joanne Alberda. On Saturday, May 15 there will be a graveside memorial at 10 AM at the Churchill Cemetery followed by a celebration of her life and the faithfulness of God at 11 AM at Manhattan Christian Reformed Church.
