Harold Dewain Smith Obituary

Harold Dewain “Butch” Smith, 74, of Oakland, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at his home with his family. Born January 29th, 1947, in Deer Park, he was the son of the late Troy Milford and Minnie Elizabeth (Smith) Smith. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Troy, Curtis, and Carliss; one sister, Shirley Smith. Butch served in the United States Army and then worked at Gordon Douglas Boat Company. He then retired from the Garrett County Roads Department as a superintendent. Butch also was an avid horseman, a business man, and a mentor. He enjoyed helping 4-H kids at the fair with their projects, and would continue advising his customers before and after the sale of one of his horses. Butch took pride in what he did and loved every minute of it. At home, he enjoyed working with his own horses and spent a lot of the time between his two farms; one in West Virginia, and the other in Oakland at his home place. At one time, Butch had twenty head of horses, but he didn’t work alone. Along with his wife Rita, he was also accompanied by his Australian Shepard, Mindy. Mindy, still alive today, will take a special place in our hearts, as she was his pup. In addition to his wife, Rita Smith, he is survived by one son, Scott Smith, and wife, Karen, Grantsville, MD; one granddaughter, Kaitlyn Smith; one brother, Richard “Dick” Smith, Cranesville, MD; one sister, Betty Stewart, Oakland; numerous nieces and nephews, and his special pup, Mindy.
