Russell Bruce Davidson Obituary

Russell Bruce Davidson, 93, passed away March 30, 2021, in Olympia, Washington. He was born September 15, 1927, to Russell James Davidson and Bessie Margaret Davidson in Wenatchee, Washington. A resident of Lacey the last three years, Bruce also resided in Olympia (September 1969 through January 2018), Wenatchee (June 1950 through August 1969), and Dryden, Washington (September 1927 through June 1950). Bruce graduated from Wenatchee Valley College in 1948 with an AA degree in Mathematics and Engineering, and from Washington State College in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Economics Statistics. He earned a Professional Traffic and Engineering Certification from Northwestern University. Russell married Betty Paukowich on June 24, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wenatchee. He served in the U.S. Navy, stationed both at San Diego, California, and the Port of Chicago, near San Francisco, California. Professionally, Bruce worked as a Civil Engineer for 58 years. He worked for long periods of time for the Washington State Department of Transportation in both Wenatchee and Olympia. After his retirement in 1981, he worked for Washington State Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency until he reached the age of 81. He also worked on Special Projects for Arvid Grant and Associates in Boston, Massachusetts, as well as the State of Washington. It is noteworthy to mention that Bruce never applied for a job--his reputation preceded him and he was sought out by his employers. Bruce, who was nicknamed Brucey or Sam Spade by those close to him, had a great sense of humor and a heart of gold. To know him was to love him. He cherished his family and loved spending time with them. He was a great supporter and tireless fan for all of his children, grandchildren and great-granchildren participating in sports and other activities. He also loved serving others. His heart was ever expanding, and he was always making room for many extra children and family members. Bruce loved cooking, and was especially famous for his tacos, lasagna, and potato salad. He loved golfing, fishing, fly tying; playing poker, cards, and board games; stained glass; dancing; and watching sports. He enjoyed hanging out at the beach, clam digging, skiing, and floating on his back on an air mattress while drinking a beer and smoking a cigar. Bruce loved watching sports, and was an avid fan of the WSU Cougars, Gonzaga Bulldogs, Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Sounders, Seattle Mariners, and of all sports. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Elks Club, and Century Club. He is survived by his wife, Betty Davidson; son, Bob Davidson (Jackie); daughters, Teri McGuire (Jim, deceased), Kathy Mahlum (Jay); five grandchildren, Erin White (Dan), Ben Davidson (Heather), Tara Whetstone, Kelsie Knight (R.J.), and Jason Mahlum; and ten great grandchildren, Shelby, Morgan, Colby, and Aidan White, Margaret and Kellen Davidson, Carter and Talia Whetstone, Hunter and Jaiden Knight. He was predeceased by Russell Davidson, Bessie Davidson, Janet Dourte, Tom Davidson, Fred Paukowich, Stella Paukowich, and many other relatives. A mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 30, 2021, 12:00 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1208 – 11th Avenue S.E., Olympia, WA 98501.
