George Asher Obituary

George J. Asher, age 80, of Marshfield, passed peacefully on Monday, April 12th, on the palliative care unit at MCHS after a long battle with lung cancer and COPD.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Marshfield on Tuesday, April 20th, at 10:30 am. Visitation for family and friends will be 1 hour before funeral Mass at the church.

George was born on August 10, 1940, to Roy and Evelyn Asher in the town of Rock Elm, WI. He graduated from Elmwood high school in 1958, enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in West Germany and Fort Knox, KY, where he graduated from Officer Candidate School. He completed 2 tours in Vietnam and assignments in the U.S. and a 2 year tour in Tehran, Iran, as a Joint Chief of Staff Advisor in the field of ammunition.

Prior to Tehran, he met and married the love of his life, Carol (Lammert), in St Louis where they worked together at the Army Procurement Center and again after Tehran until he retired after 20 years of military service at the rank of Major. His military decorations include three Bronze Stars, Silver Star Award presented by the Vietnamese, and many more awards as an enlisted soldier.

In 1984, they moved to Wisconsin and started the first ABC Seamless Siding franchise in Wisconsin which they operated until 1998.

George was a lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Military Officers Association of America, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, as well as member of American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Eagles Club, and a one time member of the Local Elks Lodge #665 where he served as Lodge Secretary.

George's hobbies were brat fry fundraisers for local disabled veterans, golf (including trips to Ireland and Scotland to golf with friends) and working on his impeccable lawn and in his shop on beautiful wood crafts. He enjoyed cooking at the House of the Dove and spending time at their Eagle River cabin to enjoy family and fishing on the pontoon in the summer and in the winter to the lower Rio Grande Valley in Mission, TX, to enjoy the warm weather with friends.

George immensely enjoyed he and Carol's five grandchildren and was very proud of his country and military career.

George is survived by his loving wife, Carol of 47 years; his children, Kimberly and Brian (Erin); grandchildren, Tyler, Alex, Ciera, Emma and Josephine; siblings, Mary, Patrick  (Sharon), Michael (Debbie) and Sara (Howard); brother/sister-in-laws, Berneice, John (Pam), Bob (Sheri), Barb (Jack); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Evelyn; mother/father-in-law, Edward and Joyce Lammert; infant son, John; son-in-law, Craig; siblings, Richard, Thomas, Leroy (Marion), Teresa, Stephen; and very close family member, Rose (Don).

Donations can be made in honor of George Asher to the Marshfield DAV and the Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Neillsville where he was presented a stone by his family for his 80th birthday.
