Sally Burattin Obituary

The Reverend Sally Burattin of Klukwan was born on August 3, 1941 to Mary Jackson King and went home to the Lord on March 17, 2021 in Juneau, Alaska at the age of 79. Sally grew up in Juneau and lived on Willoughby Avenue. She learned to sew furs from her mother and grandmother Cora, and began working at Harbor Leathers at the age of 16. She traveled extensively with her first husband Francis Jerue which included the Philippines. Sally returned to Klukwan, Alaska and later moved to Juneau where she met the love of her life Valentino Burattin. Valentino spoke only Italian and Sally taught him to speak, read and write English. Together they would enjoy many adventures and travels. In 2000 Sally and Valentino would graduate from Far North Bible College as ordained ministers. They enjoyed ministering to a flock of 35 children in Hydaburg. In 2002 they would return to the Haines/Klukwan area and were active participants in the ministry and Tlingit culture. Sally was a member of the Góon ká héni Xíxch ́ Hit (Spring Water Frog House), Gaanaxtedi Clan of Klukwan and had three Tlingit names; Áun Súx (Rushing for the Land), Áún kée (Best Part of the Land) and Kósh Dáax (Little Land Otter). A fluent speaker of Tlingit, she knew the traditional preparation and use of herbs for healing and was still doing bead work at the time of her passing. She was an excellent story teller and did hold the attention of her audience with her vivid details, expressions and gestures. Sally loved to sing and had a wonderful voice; she could sing many songs that had been translated to Tlingit. She also appeared in the video Smoking Fish. Sally was preceded in death by her mother Mary King, siblings Jeanette Delfay, Cora Netzel, Jay Baker and Joseph Baker. She is survived by brothers Edward Baker of Haines, Alaska and Jerry Baker of North Carolina. Her husband of 35 years Valentino Burattin of Klukwan; daughter Rosemarie Hotch & Robert Schumacher of Anchorage, AK; daughter Roxanna & Kimberly Jerue of Bullhead City, Arizona and son Darrel & Tina Jerue of Klukwan, Alaska. Sally has 7 grandchildren; Tasha Hotch, Edward Hotch II, Desiree Hotch, Stephanie Dush, Rosita Johnstun, Cassandra Cropley and Michael Jerue. Sally also had 11 great grandchildren; Micha, Zachary, Sara, Aiyana, Addilyn, Chase, Patrick, Cyril, Aaliyah, Kaiya and Tyler.
