Agatha Anne Bishop Napa, California Obituary

Agatha Anne Bishop

Agatha Anne (Marino) Bishop passed away in Napa on April 15, 2016 after a lengthy illness. Agatha was born in Oakland on August 20, 1919 to Anne and George Marino, Sr., the youngest of four children. Before her first birthday the family moved to Napa, where her father owned and operated Marino's Napa Grill on Third St. In 1937, Agatha graduated from Napa Union High School, a member of the National Honor Society, and attended San Jose State College and San Francisco State College for one year each. In April 1945, Agatha married her high school sweetheart, Edwin R. Bishop. Ed was in the Navy, and the couple moved all over the world with daughter Judy and son Ed Jr. including Alameda, Hawaii, England, the Philippines, and Adak, Alaska, before returning to Napa in 1973. Wherever they went, Agatha was an eager participant in community activities, and took a variety of classes, including Japanese dressmaking, oil painting, classical drawing, and the organ. At every base she played the organ for services, sometimes as many as five each Sunday, for all denominations, as well as for weddings and funerals. Once home, Agatha was active in many local clubs and associations including Community Projects, Weavers Guild, Navy League, Toast Mistresses International, the Napa Valley Quilters, and several small needlework groups. She received the Clara Barton Award from the Red Cross for being a volunteer for 50 years, including six years as the chair for all the Red Cross volunteers at Travis Air Force Base. A long-time member of Eastern Star, Agatha was the Worthy Matron of Silver Spray Chapter in 1980-1981, and later became an inspector for the California State Chapter. Agatha was predeceased by her parents, her husband Edwin R. Bishop Sr., siblings Helen Griffiths, Dorothy Rae, and George Marino Jr., and daughter Judy James. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Ed and Betty Bishop of Chester, California, grandchildren Laura James of San Francisco, Greg James of Hawaii, Aaron James of Los Angeles, Eric Bishop of Danville, and Alexis Bishop of Oregon, and great-grandchildren Paris and Oz James. Burial services were private. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
