Carroll Wilson Obituary

Carroll Jay Wilson, 67 of Ankeny, formerly of Colo, died Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at his home in Ankeny after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Carroll was born May 18, 1953, in Ames, the son of Raymond “Heav” and Ardis Arletta (Jay) Wilson. He graduated from Colo High School in 1971, then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving until his honorable discharge in 1974. Carroll farmed and raised cattle near Colo until 2011, when he moved to Ankeny to be closer to his daughters. He was the go-to handyman in Colo and the surrounding area for all things woodworking to remodeling and everything in between. Carroll was a member of the Colo United Methodist Church and the Colo Legion Post #139, serving as Commander until recently. His world revolved around his girls, their husbands, and his 6 grandchildren. More than anything he loved spending time at their ballgames, watching them swim in his pool, and playing games with them. He was a loving and devoted family man. Carroll is survived by his daughters, Jessica (Shawn) Gjerde of Ankeny and Jaclyn (Erik) Banning of Ankeny; Carrie Edmond (and family) of San Antonio, Texas; his grand- children: Cayson Gjerde, Sophia Banning, Jay Banning, Brevyn Gjerde, Aftyn Gjerde and Saylor Banning; his siblings: Mary Jane (Dave) Christy, Jim Wilson, Murry (Marlene) Wilson, Laura (Charley) Stout, Clare Wilson, Helen Crouthamel and Cassie (Keith) Hindman. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Steve Crouthamel. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 9 at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. A private funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10. The service will be livestreamed at www.rasmussonfh.com, click on Carroll’s photo, then tribute wall and click on live feed. Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Colo Cemetery in Colo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or www.aWayforWill.org, raising funds to find a cure for SLC6A1.
